1
Wash the comforter in a large-capacity washer. A commercial front-loading washer may be your best option.
-
2
Use regular laundry detergent, but be careful not to add too much. Too much detergent will make rinsing difficult and may leave excess in your comforter. Milder detergents designed for down-filled products are available, but are not really necessary.

3
Select the appropriate temperature setting. Generally, use cold or warm water. Be aware that the warm water cycle at a laundromat may be warmer than your washer's cycle at home. When in doubt, select cold water.
-
4
Add fabric softener to the dispenser. Again, you will need less than what you would use in a normal load of laundry.
-
5
Wash as usual on the normal setting.
-
6
Dry the comforter. A clothes line is best on sunny days with a nice breeze. Turn the comforter when the top appears dry so the underside can be dried thoroughly.
-
7
With an electric dryer, use the warm heat setting. Add the comforter and three clean tennis balls. Allow to dry for 10 to 15 minutes and then check it. The comforter should be completely dry with no damp areas. Continue to dry on 10- to 15-minute intervals until the comforter is completely dry and fluffed. If the comforter bunches or balls up in the dryer, remove and reposition it.

Allow the comforter to cool and check for dampness. It is easy to overlook damp areas when clothes are warm from the dryer.
