Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet Hook Size E
  • Soft Light to Medium Weight Yarn
  • Elastic Hair Tie
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Pick a yarn weight and color that matches the outfit you want to match up with your homemade hair accessory. You can use light or medium weight yarn in any color. Specialty yarns such as chenille, eyelash yarn, or crochet ribbon can also be used to make a hair scrunchie.

  2. Step 2

Pick up the elastic hair tie and lay a length of the yarn next to it. Hold this. Position your crochet hook and other hand in the normal crochet position with the yarn looped over your finger. Begin covering the elastic hair tie by making a slip stitch to fix the yarn to the ponytail holder. Do this by putting the crochet hook inside the loop, hooking the yarn and then pulling it back through to the other side. Then yarn over the hook and pull that yarn through the first loop you have. Your yarn is now attached to the elastic hair tie at one point.

  3. Step 3

Make three chain stitches by putting yarn over the crochet hook and pulling it through the loop. These stitches will not be attached to the elastic hair tie yet. This pattern will make a simple, ruffled hair scrunchie that will look great with many outfits.

  4. Step 4

Create a double crochet stitch around the elastic hair tie loop. A double crochet is made by loop yarn over the hook and then sticking the crochet hook through the elastic hair tie loop. Hook yarn over the hook again from the left hand and pull it back through the elastic hair tie, thus creating a small stitch that covers the elastic. Then, yarn over again and draw that loop through only the first two loops on the crochet hook. Yarn over one more time and then draw that loop through the remaining loops on the crochet hook. That is one double crochet stitch.

  5. Step 5

Continue making double crochet stitches all the way around the elastic hair band. Make enough to cover the elastic hair band completely, even when stretching the band slightly. The double crochet stitches will form a ruffle around the outside of the hair scrunchie loop.

  6. Step 6

Finish the hair scrunchie by making a hidden knot at the base of the elastic hair band, or you can weave the yarn ends in carefully to the other stitches.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try crochet hair scrunchies with other stitches such as triple crochet, seashell patterns, and loops of chain stitches.
  • Test for color-fastness and secure the yarn ends before machine washing.
