How to Play a B Flat Yo Scale on the Guitar

The Yo scale is a Japanese pentatonic scale. A pentatonic scale differs from the traditional major or minor scale in that it has only 5 instead of 7 notes. Try using this unique scale next time you solo or compose to add some character to your playing.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Guitar
  1. Step 1

    Place your middle finger on the sixth fret of the sixth string (low E string). This is the root note of the scale.

  2. Step 2

    Using your pinky, hold down the eighth fret of the sixth string. This is the note C, the second degree of the B flat Yo scale.

  3. Step 3

    Use your middle finger to hold down the sixth fret of the fifth string (A string.) This is the note E flat, the third degree of the B flat Yo scale.

  4. Step 4

    Play the eighth fret of the fifth string with your pinky. This is the note F. the fourth degree of the B flat Yo scale.

  5. Step 5

    Hold down the fifth fret of the fourth string with your forefinger. This is the G, the final note of the B flat Yo scale.

  6. Step 6

    Play the scale in reverse. Play Steps 5 through 1 in reverse order to complete the scale.
