Talk to People

Talking to people can be an intimidating experience. Knowing what to say and when and how to say things is confusing and might discourage communication for the timid. Don't worry--the following steps will show you how to successfully interact with and talk to people in a manner that will encourage conversation.

Instructions

    • 1

Show interest. People love to talk about themselves, so ask questions about them. Give appropriate responses to their stories, like "wow," "interesting" and "oh" to show that you're listening and have interest in what they're saying.

    • 2

Repeat their words or themes back to them to show that you've been listening and that you understand (or are trying to) what they are saying.

    • 3

Listen. People love to talk, so let them. They will like you more because their ego will be boosted that you've shown an interest in them and taken the time to listen to them. Besides, the more they talk, the less you have to.

    • 4

Maintain eye contact. This shows that your attention is focused on the person and what they're saying.

    • 5

Smile. Be friendly and don't be afraid to show some teeth when you're talking or listening. It will help the other person feel more relaxed around you.

    • 6

Create a non-threatening tone of voice. Don't raise your voice or speak harshly. Speak in a pleasant conversation tone.

    • 7

Be humble. Don't talk too much about yourself. People will get bored and will tune you out if you continually talk about yourself, unless you're answering a question from someone.

    • 8

Be respectful of the other person's "personal space" and time. If you know that a person is in a hurry, don't burden them with a long story or questions. They'll be more likely to want to talk to you at a later time if you respect their time now.
