35MM slides were popular in the 1960s and 1970s. With the advent of computers, digital cameras and camcorders, they are less so today. Taking a sequence of pictures or a video is easy and doesn't require the special equipment of years past, such as slide projectors and specially developed film. To preserve those old 35MM memories, you can easily convert 35MM slides to JPG digital files with your home computer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 35MM slides
  • Computer
  • Flatbed scanner
  • Slide adaptor
  • Photoshop
  1. Step 1

Purchase a 35MM slide scanner adapter. These adapters do not usually come with your flatbed scanner, so they will need to be bought at a specialty shop or online retailer. Some of the slide adapters will also scan film negatives, making them useful for other scanning jobs.

  2. Step 2

Clean your 35MM slides. Any dust or smudges on the slides will be picked up when scanned and show on your final JPG file. Use some rubbing alcohol or other recommended cleaner to gently wipe away fingerprints and other dirt.

  3. Step 3

Position your slide within the 35MM slide scanner on the flatbed scanner according to the manufacturer's instructions. Install any hardware-specific drivers for your adapter or scanner, so that it can communicate with Photoshop.

  4. Step 4

Open Photoshop (either the full version or Photoshop Elements) and use the "Acquire" feature to obtain a scan from your slide. Set the resolution of your scan to at least 300 DPI--that way, you will be able to print your scanned slides at any size.

  5. Step 5

Touch up your new JPG-formatted picture. When you convert 35MM slides to JPG, they color may seem a bit off or the picture may be skewed. By using the various filters and techniques available on Photoshop, you should be able to correct your image on screen. Save your file as a JPG and you will be able to share your scanned slides with anyone who wants a digital copy.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to use slides that are in good condition. Faded slides will not scan well and may not be true to the original picture.
  • Not all slides can be scanned, and not all images come out in the right color. It may take a lot of touch up in Photoshop to get your digital files looking good.
