How to Start a Poulan Chain Saw When the Engine is Cold
Poulan chain saws have a reputation for being rugged, dependable and able to handle a variety of woodcutting tasks. Whether you are a seasoned lumberjack or just have a weekend project, you’ve got to get the engine started before you can start cutting. Poulan chain saws are designed for easy starting, but the procedures are a little different depending on whether you are starting an engine that has been running for a while or one that is completely cold. - Container of properly mixed 2-cycle engine fuel
- Heavy duty gloves
- Eye protection
- Ear rrotection

Move the chain saw to an outdoor location that is free of combustible materials such as leaves, paper or dry grass. Set the Poulan chain saw on its right side with the fuel cap up. Remove the fuel cap by turning it counter clockwise. Set the cap aside.

Remove the cap from the container of 2-cycle engine fuel. Set the cap aside. Pour the fuel from the container into the fuel receptacle on the chain saw until the fuel reaches the desired level. Replace the cap on the fuel container. Replace the fuel mix fill cap on the chain saw and tighten it securely. Move the chain saw at least 10 feet from the fueling site before attempting to start. Set the chain saw on its bottom.

Put on eye protection, ear protection and heavy duty gloves. Push the ON/STOP switch, located on the back of the chain saw engine, up to the ON position. Pull the CHOKE lever, located beneath the ON/STOP switch, out as far as it will go to the FULL CHOKE position. Press the primer bulb, located on the left hand side of the chain saw engine, 6 times.

Place your right foot through the rear handle of the chain saw. Grasp the front handle of the chain saw with your left hand. Grasp the starter rope handle with your right hand. Give the starter rope 5 sharp pulls.

Push the CHOKE lever in one notch to the HALF CHOKE position. Pull the starter rope sharply with your right hand until the engine starts, but no more than 10 times. Allow the engine to run for 30 seconds. Squeeze and release the throttle trigger with your right hand to allow the engine to return to its proper idle speed.

Tips & Warnings
If the chain saw does not start after 10 pulls the engine may be flooded.

Never smoke while fueling or operating a chain saw.
The chain should not move when the chain saw runs at idle speed. If it does consult your owner’s manual to adjust the carburetor.
