Halloween is a fun holiday for children. Some kids go in for scary, creepy stuff. Some just want fun and candy. Instead of creating spooky and scary decorations in your home and yard, it's a great idea to create something cute and whimsical for the little children that parade around this time of year. This little ghost decoration that attaches to your string of lights is cute and fun to make. Your children can even help make them!
Things You'll Need
- Heavy Stock Computer Paper
- Black Magic Marker
- Scotch Tape
- Small String of Lights (clear, orange, or black)
Draw your interpretation of a cute ghost on an 8 X 10 sheet of heavy stock computer paper. Use a wide line black magic marker. Fill up the entire sheet. Draw in black circles for his eyes.
Run your picture through the copier on your printer to make several more identical ghosts, or you and your children can draw each one individually. Be cute and creative.
Cut around the magic marker lines to free your ghost from his paper bounds. Children can help do this using blunt end scissors.
Poke holes right in the center of his eyes. You can use a hole punch, if the eyes are placed just right, or do it with an ice pick or screwdriver. This part should be done by an adult or an older, supervised child.
Spread your lights out across a table for easy working. Push a tiny light through each of the ghost’s eyes. Make sure they go all of the way through, so that the plastic part of the light is resting on the paper ghost.
Attach as many of the ghosts to your lights as you like. Spread them out sporadically, or have a tight chain of little ghosts. Tape the light’s wire to the back of the ghost to hold it securely.
String your ghost lights across the front of your house or porch railing, You can even place them inside your house on a wall. If you are putting them outside, be sure you are using outdoor approved lights.
To make bigger ghosts, draw them on a poster board instead. You will need to attach these ghosts to a stake for support and place them in the ground. Either way, your children will have fun making them and seeing them in or around your home.
Tips & Warnings
- Only keep the lights on for a limited amount of time with the decorations attached.
- Never have the lights on unattended.
- Watch for fire hazards.
