Metal Window Frames

Eventually, all window frames require some type of maintenance. Daily weather conditions begin to wear away at the caulking that was put in place to seal any spaces between the window and the home. Latex caulking begins to dry out and crack along the seam, which can cause drafts to enter the home. In addition, water that enters through old, cracked caulking can cause extensive damage both on the interior and exterior of the home. Learn how to remove latex caulking from metal window frames so that new latex caulking can be applied to seal the windows.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Window cleaner
  • Cleaning cloth
  • Scraping tool
  • Heat gun or hair dryer
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Cotton balls
  • Vacuum cleaner
  1. Step 1

Clean the entire area of the window using any window cleaner, including the window panes and frames. It is important to do this first since it should not be done when the caulking is removed or when the new caulking is still drying.

  2. Step 2

Scrape the caulking away from the metal window frame, using a scraping tool. Scrape away as much as possible from the entire frame. Work around the entire window frame.

  3. Step 3

Use a heat gun set on low or a hair dryer to soften the remaining latex caulk. As the caulk is heated and softened, use the scraping tool to remove it. Again, work around the entire window.

  4. Step 4

Soak cotton balls with denatured alcohol and remove any remaining latex caulking and residue from the metal window frame. Allow the frame to dry.

  5. Step 5

Use a vacuum cleaner to pick up any small pieces of dirt and caulking that stuck to the window, the frame and the window sill. Apply new latex caulking according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips & Warnings
  • To prevent melting the caulking, keep the heat gun or hair dryer continuously moving over the surface.
  • Use a mold killer to remove any mildew or mold present around the window frame.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions when using a heat gun. Temperature should be set on low.
  • Always wear protective eye wear and gloves when working with any type of chemicals.
