Deciding to get your nose pierced is a pretty commonplace decision in today's society, but how many people can say they've pierced their own nose? While nose piercing used to be a mark of originality, now it has become popular for high schoolers all over the United States. Be warned, though, that at-home piercings can result in infections and scars, so you may want to think about your decision before taking the plunge. Most ear-piercing locations will pierce your nose for a very inexpensive price. However, if you simply must pierce your own nose, follow the steps below to pierce your nose as quickly, painlessly and safely as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Take a clean, brand-new and unused needle, thimble and nose stud and place them in a bowl filled with rubbing alcohol. Just rubbing the needle in rubbing alcohol is not enough to sterilize it. You must soak both the stud and the needle in alcohol in order to clean it properly.

  2. Step 2

Put new, sterile rubber gloves on both hands. This way, you can guarantee that everything that touches your nose will be sterile from this moment until the piercing is completed.

  3. Step 3

Draw a dot with sharpie on the part of the nostril where you would like to pierce your nose. Look at pictures and other nose piercings for reference.

  4. Step 4

Use an ice cube to numb the outside of your nose. Hold on the outside of the nostril you wish to pierce for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  5. Step 5

Submerge a sterile, brand-new cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and rub against the outside surface of your nose to sterilize the surface.

  6. Step 6

Take the needle and thimble out of the rubbing alcohol. Put the thimble inside your nose, and press the needle against the thimble. The hard surface of the thimble should allow the needle to pass through your nose with some effort. This step will be painful.

  7. Step 7

Remove the thimble, leaving the needle in your nose. With rubber gloves still on, remove the stud from the rubbing alcohol and replace the needle with the stud quickly, so the hole doesn't close up.

  8. Step 8

Dip a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and gently rub the pierced area to further sterilize it.

  9. Step 9

Throw away the needle and thimble. You will need to keep the stud in for at least 6 weeks, removing it daily only to clean it after the first month. See further aftercare instructions in the Resources section below.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to clean the piercing daily with a q-tip or cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol to prevent infection.
  • Piercing your nose can cause infection, even if done professionally or in a completely sterile environment.
  • Do not attempt to pierce your nose unless you are over 18 years of age.
