How to Get a Basketball Coaching License
There is no actual license that says you are certified to coach basketball. However, being a college graduate with coaching experience is the biggest certification you can have in this field. Coaching has different logistical requirements at each level. The main requirement is experience of some sort. This article will show you what you need to do to qualify for a coaching position at the high school and collegiate levels.

1
Obtain, at minimum, an Associates Degree before you begin your quest for a legitimate coaching job. This is the main certification you need to begin the process.
-
2
Register to take online basketball coaching courses to add more technical experience. Find these courses for free at Sports Learning (see Resources below). Some will cost you a small one time fee. If you want to take your technical experience to the next level, attend a full basketball training camp. The major associations that hold these are the AAU and Blue Chips. This could cost nearly $2,000 with travel and expense and your registration fee. They do offer special training for coaches.

3
Gather three letters of reference from any coaching experience you might have had in the past. These letters are usually another requirement.
-
4
Start your search for open basketball coaching jobs. Go to these specific websites to see listings: Simply Hired, The Coaches Marketing Group and College Sports Careers (see Resources below). All of these sites offer a wide variety of high school and college coaching jobs around the U.S.

5
Create a video resume along with your written resume when you are ready to apply. The video resume gives you the upper hand on other coaches that are applying. Coaching is about personality and enthusiasm, and the school's athletic director would love to see that verses only reading it.
