Things You'll Need
- 2 yards-60-inch wide fabric for the top
- 2 yards-60-inch wide fabric for the back
- 6 1/2 yards-trim of choice
- Matching thread
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Hand sewing needle
- Seam sealant
- Measuring tape
- Iron
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure and trim the ends of the two yard lengths to match. If trimming and alterations make the pieces shorter than two yards, that is OK, as long as the front and the back are the same measurement.
-
2
Layer the two pieces of the throw blanket together with the right sides facing on a flat surface, and pin.
-
-
3
Sew a 1/2-inch seam allowance around the edges of the throw blanket, leaving a 10-inch opening for turning.
-
4
Press the seams open. Trim the seam allowance from the backing fabric to a scant 1/4 inch. Leave the top fabric at a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Clip the corners and turn the throw blanket right side out.
-
5
Press the edges of the throw blanket.
-
6
Hand stitch the opening closed.
-
7
Pin the trim of choice 1/4 inch from the throw blanket edge. Start and end with an overlap on one short end.
-
8
Apply a seam sealant to the ends of the trim to avoid fraying. Allow to dry.
-
9
Stitch the trim to the throw blanket with matching thread.

Tips & Warnings
Throw blankets are a wonderful excuse to go funky with fake furs, elegant with beautiful tapestry fabrics or totally impractical with silks and satins.
Make one with a lush bullion fringe to drape over a couch.
For a down to earth car blanket, piece old jeans together and add an eyelet trim for those ball games or impromptu picnics.
Throw blankets make great Christmas or birthday gifts and can be personalized with colors and novelty prints. Use your imagination to make a one-of-a-kind treat.
If you are using a thick or heavy fabric, trim the seam allowance of both the front and the back to a scant 1/4 inch. This will prevent possible needle breakage and bulk under the presser foot.
