How to Slow Down on a Snowboard

Snowboards can go really fast when you point them downhill and that can be pretty scary for the novice snowboarder. Follow these steps to slow down on a snowboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Understand how to slow down on a snowboard. When a snowboard is pointed downhill it will go faster. When it is pointed perpendicular to the downhill direction it will stop. To slow down on a snowboard you need to move toward a stop.

    • 2

Turn into the hill. As you are going downhill move your weight toward your front foot, turn your face and body toward the mountain and cut the inside edge of the snowboard into the snow. You will start to turn and slow down.

    • 3

Try it the other way. Cutting the outside edge of the snowboard into the snow as you turn into the hill the other way slows down the snowboard in the same way.

    • 4

Shift back and forth. If you want to slow down but not stop or make a big turn, try a bunch of small turns. Use a slalom-like motion turning on your front side edge then your back side edge then repeating. This will slow your speed down the hill without changing direction.

    • 5

Sideslip your way down. If you want to go really slow on a snowboard, cut your edge into the snow and slide down the hill sideways. You will scrape the snow all the way. The more you lean back and cut your edge into the snow, the slower you will go.
