Peace lilies are beautiful, big, and brighten any room they are in. These lovely plants are a cinch to care for. Follow the steps below to add a pop of green and classy foliage to any space in your home.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Pick Your Plant

  1. Step 1

Choose a small lily to start with. They are very easy to find and you will probably be able to locate a decent plant at your local home improvement store or supermarket florist.

  2. Step 2

Pick a plant that is completely green and is standing up stiff and full. Don't buy a plant that has brown tips, brown leaves, or is wilting.

  3. Step 3

Check if the plant has any buds getting ready to bloom. A new plant is always more satisfying if it blooms for you in the first few weeks of being home.

  4. Choose the Best Location

  5. Step 1

Place the lily in a spot were it can get filtered but bright sunlight. The best place would be on a table a few feet from a window that receives high afternoon light. They will do well as far away from the light source as 10 feet, but any further away than that would be hurtful to the plant.

  6. Step 2

Keep the plant away from anywhere that has a cool draft or hot, humid draft. This includes air conditioner vents and shower stalls. Peace lilies can take a certain amount of temperature swing (around 20 degrees in either direction) but nothing too drastic.

  7. Step 3

Make sure the pot and drain dish you have set up with the lily allows your plant to drain well, as they do best without standing water in their roots.

  8. Caring for the Plant

  9. Step 1

Water a peace lily about once a week. Before you water them, touch the topsoil with the tips of your fingers to gauge how much water you should give them. If the topsoil is dry, pour in one to two cups (depending on the size of the plant). If the topsoil is a little moist, one half cup should be sufficient.

  10. Step 2

Feel free to remove any dry, brown or dead leaves from the plant as it ages and grows. This will encourage more growth and keep your plant looking beautiful.

  11. Step 3

Fertilize the plant once every three months with liquid fertilizer. Slow release tablets are harsher on the peace lily system and can cause roots to burn.

  12. Step 4

Repot plants every two to three years, depending on the growth of the plant.
