Step 1
Always watch TV with your kid. Explain to them the program in very interesting way. This will help to build habit of looking for your presence while watching TV.

Step 2
While watching TV at odd hours and continous hour show your dislike. Explain to them the bad side of watching TV continously.

Step 3
Whenever they watch some odd channel or wath for long time, switch channel to some other news channel explain to them that Dad/Mom don't like that channel and want to watch some other news channel.

Step 4
Initially he/she will resist, but if you convince them and practice for a couple of weeks, they will get their habit changed and will be ready to switch off and on TV whenver its just needed.
