Get Rays Without The Burn - Avoiding Sun Burn

Sun burns are a curse on fair skinned sun bathers. If we aren't as white as snow, we are as red as a tomato.

But there are ways to avoid the burn and still get a nice tanned look.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sun
  • Sun block
  • Beach Towel
  • Shade
  • Umbrella
  1. Step 1

    SUN BLOCK

Spray sun lotions are very effective in reaching areas you can't get to by hand. Many cost between $6 and $12. I used my friend's bottle and after spraying every inch of me and spending hours in the sun, I didn't burn. Stranger than that, I didn't tan! So if you are looking to avoid a tan all together try a spray on sun screen with SPF 15 or 30 in a liberal amount.

  2. Step 2

    TANNING OIL

This is fine to use if you aren't fair skinned. If you are, be careful not to stay in the sun too long. No more than a half hour total. Fifteen minutes on your back and fifteen minutes on your stomach is best.

  3. Step 3

    SPRAY ON TAN

Don't get a $6.99 bottle of tanner. I did this once and I looked jaundice for a week. Tanning salons have a service where they literally spray your tan on and you don't have to worry about the possible skin damage from sun bathing.

  4. Step 4

    TANNING SALON

Especially if you are fair skinned, it might not be a bad idea to go to a tanning salon before you hit the beach. Going a few times for as little as 5 minutes can give you some protection for when you are on the beach running around in the real thing.

  5. Step 5

    USE SHADE

If there is a tree, sit under it. If not, it would be a good idea to use a beach umbrella. If you are prone to burn, wear a t-shirt when you will spend a lot of time in the sun. Put one on when you get out of the pool, especially if your sun block isn't water proof.

Tips & Warnings
  • Skin cancer is on the rise because of our sun worshipping habits. Always take precautions. Don't believe that you are safe even if you aren't fair skinned. Darker skin does provide more protection but it is wise to wear sun block anyway.
  • If you notice any new and unusual spots or bumps that are more than freckles, get checked out by your doctor.

on 8/7/2008 I ease myself into the summer sun gradually and stay inside during the hottest hours. :)
