Plant a Palm Tree From Seed
Plant a Palm Tree From Seed

Growing up in California, palm trees are a permanent fixture. Here's how to grow your own palm tree from seed.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Research what variety of palm trees grow best in your area. A simple call or visit to your local nursery will yield the names of palm tree plants best grown in your area.

  2. Step 2

Purchase seeds from a reputable dealer. JungleMusic.net provides palms and cycad tree seeds and has been growing palm trees from seed for almost 25 years. There website is also one of a few that provides detailed growing-from-seed instructions for palm trees.

  3. Step 3

Check seeds when they arrive. Seeds that are greener in color are immature seeds. You can perform seed checks in two different ways: 1. Pinch the seeds firmly with your thumb and forefinger. If they easily collapse, they are immature or old seeds. Discard these seeds. 2. Float test. Float seeds in water. Viable seeds will sink, non viable seeds will stay floating.

  4. Step 4

Soak seeds: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before planting. This will give the seeds a jump start on growing.

  5. Step 5

Plant seeds: Seeds will grow best in an enviornment with 60-70% humidity and temperatures of 80-85 degrees. Keep seeds away from direct, hot sunlight. It is best to plant your seed in a planting box or pot first before placing it in the ground. This limits the amount of predators and bugs able to be exposed to the seed. Simply fill your pot 3/4 of a way full with potting soil. Place the seed. Than cover seed with remaning 1/4 soil. Keep well watered, but not completely saturated that seed will develop fungus.

  6. Step 6

Growth times: Growth times depend on the type of palm tree species you have chosen to plant. Some take 6-12 months before you can transplant them to an outdoor garden area.
