How to Get Past Hospital Phobia or Work with It

How can you be hurt and not go to the hospital? Odd question, simple answer. The only reason anyone would hesitate going to the hospital when injured is because they think that the hospital will harm them instead of cure them. With thinking like that, who would want to go to a place like that. Now, actually, hospital phobia is not really a phobia if that is the reason. It all makes sense. If someone will harm you, then why go there for help? Yes it is true that not all hospitals harm people, and some cure and heal patients. And the opposite is true also. There are many hospitals that maim, infect and kill patients. So one might develop a hospital phobia based on reality or based on real fears. Recently I was in a serious car accident, and I did not want to go to the hospital. I entered the ambulance and said examine me only but do not transport me. The minute that I entered the ambulance I began having flashback memories of the damage, the negligence and the malpractice that I had witnessed inside of one large "teaching" hospital and inside of one rehabilitation center. These memories did not aid me in wanting help from any hospital. In fact, these memories and real thoughts (they were actual occurances), made me terrified of hospitals, nursing homes , rehabilitation centers and some doctors also. Bit by bit, flash by flash, my memory went back to when I had visited someone inside a large teaching hosptial and then later inside of a rehabiltation and care center. Both of these places damaged and harmed the patient and harmed other patients who were there. Both of these places had lost lawsuits of negligence and or malpractice and both had been previously cited by the state for problematic occurances. Seeing these things, witnessing problems inside of hospitals makes a person not want to go to a hospital. That is clear and that is a fact. So, what does one do in cases of accidents when one is hospital-phobic due to past witnessing of malpractice and negligence inside facilities? Read this article , and go past the comment and email box and also read the tips and warnings section, to understand the topic more fully.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • g00d hospitals
  • good doctors
  • recommendations
  • relaxation
  • testing on premises
  • walk in doctor's offices
  • patience
  • zen
  • feng shui
  • belief in God
  • Faith
Step1
There is absolutely nothing that you can say or do to make someone less fearful of a hospital after that someone has witnessed malpractice, negligence and harming inside hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Your words do nothing for that person.

The fact is that the circumstances are real. The person has already witnesed the harming, has already witnessed the neglect and malpractice, and there is nothing that changes those facts. To mimize those facts,to ignore those facts just makes the person feel the more reason to avoid hospitalization. THe reason for this is because the person knows what they saw and you do not know what they saw. So they have more facts and you have none.

So step one in understanding hospital- phobia is knowing that the person's fears are very real, and very important, and knowing that your words will not make them less fearful.
Step2
Step two is easy; brainstorm to find a solution to the problem. Most times, since going to the hospital is out of the question, then next best thing is going to a doctor that has xrays and testing on the premises. This makes the appointment a one-stop deal and does minimize the amount of times the person has to have this hospital phobia anxiety.

And yes, the phobia can transfer over to doctors since the average person knows that all or almost all doctors are affiliated with one or two or three hospitals.

So scout out a doctor that has walk in --no appointments and also one that has xrays and testing right on premises.

If you are hospital-phobic that might help you.
When your fears pop up , remember your faith in God. And yes, even though you have faith in God, you are permitted to remember what really happened in that rehabilitation and care center.

Do the work, and have faith in God, but never ignor malpractice or negligence.
Step3
Make the appointment or walk -in for the early morning or daytime hours. This alleviates fears because the night, the dark, almost always can double a person's fear or phobia. Why? It is obvious . Things are hidden under darkness. More things can happen at night than can happen in the daytime. Most times people are more alert and more open and receptive in the daytime hours than they are after dark or in the evening (when you are talking about patients and doctors and doctor's offices).

Last but not least, realize that the person who was injured might need some time to get adjusted to going to a doctor. So, time, space, and relaxation all aid in finally getting that needed examination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk with friends and relatives if you are the patient. If you are the bystander or friend or relative, limit questions as you do not know which kind of questions or what questions will be causing more anxiety. Be there to listen, but not to ask .
  • If you are highly concerned about a particular office, doctor or nurse, check them out with the licensing bureaus or with the government. You check out your car mechanic, so why not check out the doctor?
  • Stay out of the hospital where you witnessed the malpractice, neglect or harm.
  • Report anything that you can report to the authorities. Keep notes. Keep records. Be organized.
