The problem of head lice is more common than you might think. Although contracting head lice poses a major inconvenience, it can be treated effectively and naturally, in the comfort of your own home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shower Cap
  • Mayonnaise (or Olive Oil)
  • Mild Shampoo
  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Lice Comb
  1. Step 1

Cover entire head with mayonnaise or olive oil, making sure all hair is saturated. Cover eyelashes, as well. Place shower cap on head, for at least 90 minutes. (Note: if possible, longer is better.)This treatment process will effectively smother the live lice.

  2. Step 2

Rinse out mayonnaise or olive oil. Wash hair at least twice, with a mild shampoo.

  3. Step 3

Comb hair with a lice comb. It's best to separate hair into thin strands, one to two inches wide. If hair is long this process may be lengthy.

Any live lice should be placed in a cup of rubbing alcohol where they will die.

  4. Step 4

Remaining nit eggs must be removed by hand. They are white or clear in color and oval in shape. They stick to individual pieces of hair as if they have been attached with super glue.

Slide each egg off of hair and dispose of it in rubbing alcohol, as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pinching pennies? Buy store brand mayonnaise or olive oil.
  • Check for lice for a few days after treatment. Re-apply mayonnaise, if necessary.
  • Avoid sharing combs or head wear such as hats durags and headbands.

on 11/22/2009 I recommend the Cetaphil treatment a.k.a. Nuvo treatment. No need to remove the nits, and nontoxic. If you do use this treatment, I suggest following the Nuvo method of doing it once a week for three weeks to get rid of the adults. Removing all the nits is difficult to impossible, and not really necessary.
