Things You'll Need:
- Pet Food Container
- Soapy Water
- Larger Container such as a tupperware bowl.
-
Step 1
1. Remove any old pet food and ants. Clean the area the ants were in with soapy water or a cleaner. The soap will remove the scent of ant trails.
-
Step 2
2. Set the clean food dish in a glass or plastic pan/bowl larger than the food dish, not too deep (such as a tupperware bowl or cake pan. Not steel as this will get too hot for your small pet if left outside). The pan of water will act as a moat and keep the ants out.
-
Step 3
3. Another solution is to use two dishes, one slightly larger than the other. Use industrial strength glue (like Goop) to attach a small piece of brick or very flat stone to the underside of the smaller dish. Once the glue dries, put water in the larger dish. Place the smaller dish+brick into the larger dish of water. The water acts as a moat and keeps the ants off the food. The brick keeps the food dish from tipping over and raises it well above the water level.
-
Step 4
4. Set the dish/ moat combination in a different area for two days or more. The ants will eventually quit returning. But even if you leave it in the same place if the water is about an inch deep the ants will not cross it. (If they do cross it the water is not deep or wide enough)
