How to Change the Master Password in Mozilla Thunderbird

You've been using Mozilla Thunderbird for quite sometime. You even set up a master password to protect all your saved passwords. But suddenly, for reasons known only to you, the desire to change the master password came unbidden. Here's what you can do.

Things You'll Need:

  • Mozilla Thunderbird
  1. Step 1

    Open Mozilla Thunderbird.

  2. Step 2

    Click TOOLS > OPTIONS. You will see four tabs - GENERAL, DISPLAY, COMPOSITION, PRIVACY, ATTACHMENTS, ADVANCED and LIGHTNING.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the PRIVACY tab. You will see four tabs - JUNK, E-MAIL SCAMS, ANTI-VIRUS and PASSWORDS.

  4. Step 4

    Click on the PASSWORDS tab. You will find the tick box that says "Use a master password to encrypt stored passwords" will be checked. On the right side, you will find two buttons: the first one, "CHANGE MASTER PASSWORD", and the second, "REMOVE MASTER PASSWORD."

  5. Step 5

    Click on the "CHANGE MASTER PASSWORD" button. The "CHANGE MASTER PASSWORD" window will pop up.

  6. Step 6

    Type the current password in the "CURRENT PASSWORD" field.

  7. Step 7

    Then fill in the "ENTER NEW PASSWORD" and "RE-ENTER PASSWORD" fields. You can check the "PASSWORD QUALITY METER" to check your chosen password's strength or weakness level.

  8. Step 8

    Once you've completed the fields, click OK. You will return to the OPTIONS window.

  9. Step 9

    Once more, click OK. Your new master password is all set!
