Step 1
If you are retired and have no place in particular you need to go then there are numerous opportunities for RV owners to make money or receive free campground space. Across the US and Canada there are state and provincial parks that allow a campground "host" to park for a number of weeks in exchange for looking after certain things in a campground, such as where trailers park, firewood sales, etc.
In addition, many RV park owners are looking for reliable campers to remain on site for a portion of the year and care for the park in exchange for free site fees and possibly a small salary. -
Step 2
Another less well known form of RV income is to be an oilfield gate guard.
Oil drilling companies need gate guards with RV's to set up at the entrances to large and small ranches and farms and check persons in. It involves getting the license plate, name and purpose of the visit on a sign in sheet, or denying the person entry. It rarely involves inspection of vehicles, those jobs are left to security companies. -
Step 3
One way for RV'ers to find out about these jobs is to search for "oilfield gate guards" or "oilfield security" and contact those companies that provide that service. Many times they will hire reliable retired couples who pass a background check to be gate guards. Another way is to contact small independent drilling companies in an area that you are visiting. One way to find these is to visit a site like Rigzone.com and try calling the companies listed under drilling contractors and seeing if any of them are in need of reliable gate guards.
Another way is to stop and visit with gate guards that are working and ask for contact information for the contractor they are working for, or if they are independent for tips on what drilling companies to talk to. As a group RV'ers are helpful toward each other and don't mind giving you advice. One are where gate guarding is very active is the Rio Grande Valley, from McAllen to Laredo. Almost every rig that is working in that area, (currently over 200) has a gate guard. Just stop and chat and you may find your way into a very lucrative part time career. With gas prices being what they are it couldn't hurt to have some good paying work for a couple of months before hitting the road again.
