Stereotactic breast biopsies are very accurate and minimally invasive. You are not "put to sleep" and you can typically resume normal activities the day after.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Someone to drive you
  • Comfortable clothing
  • Soothing music
  1. Step 1

Avoid any over the counter medications that thin your blood, such as aspirin, for about a week prior.

  2. Step 2

Ask someone to drive you. Sometimes just the stress of having the biopsy and of lying in one position for so long can be difficult to handle, so a good friend goes a long way.

  3. Step 3

Take a shower before the biopsy, but do not use any deodorant, lotions or perfumes.

  4. Step 4

Wear a button up shirt. Your breasts will be wrapped tight after the biopsy and you may be a little sore if you raise your hands above your head.

  5. Step 5

Wear sweat pants or something similar. You will be lying on your tummy so stay away from anything with zippers or snaps.

  6. Step 6

Watch your fluid intake. You have to lie still a long time so you'll be very glad you didn't drink 3 cups of coffee before hand.

  7. Step 7

Bring your favorite music. Some stereotactic biopsy rooms have CD players in them for your music. You can find out by calling ahead and asking. Otherwise, bring your iPod.

  8. Step 8

Take some time off. Most women go back to work the next day while others are too sore. Give yourself the option to stay home and rest if you feel like you need to.

  9. Step 9

Look at pictures of the stereotactic biopsy table online and read personal accounts by women who've had a stereotactic biopsy. Knowledge is power. You'll find links to do that in the resources section below.
