If you're going to resign, do it with tact and don't burn any bridges.
If you're going to resign, do it with tact and don't burn any bridges.

A step by step on resigning from your job.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • An open, unbiased mind.
  1. Step 1
    Think before burning any bridges.
    Think before burning any bridges.

Begin by earnest asking yourself, is resigning from this job in my best interest? Does this job satisfy all my financial responsibilities? Do I currently have or foresee getting employment that will make my life better or offer me more freedom and fulfilment? If the answer is an easy "yes," feel free to drop the bomb.

  2. Step 2
    How to drop the bomb.
    How to drop the bomb.

Now gather your thoughts, no matter how unhappy you maybe at your job, ask yourself these questions: what is the most diplomatic way you can flesh out your reasons for resignation? What are some of the good things that your employer did have to offer? What are some positive attributes that the people you work with possess? When you write your letter you should try to weave these things into it to make your departure more diplomatic and help insure you'll have a good reference to draw on if needed. Don't gripe or even make mention of anything even remotely negative about your supervisors, co-workers, or subordinates. Keep in mind that any negativity true or untrue, could come back ti haunt you later on.

  3. Step 3

When you write your letter keep things brief, pleasant, and to the point, also, be sure to include a date of resignation.

  4. Step 4

Here is an example of the format you should use when writing your letter (this is just a sample to give a basic demonstration):

    Attention: Zak Bossman
    2 Hell's Ridge
    Hell, MA 12355

    Dear Mr. Bossman,
I hereby tender my two weeks notice of resignation from Burger Inferno. Please make any necessary arrangements for my resignation, which is effective 01/15/1918.

Despite my necessary resignation, I highly enjoyed working with you and much of what I know about flipping and wrapping burgers is because of the first rate training and coaching I received during the course of my employment.

I will continue to help and assist at Burger Inferno in any way I can until my resignation.

    Much gratitude,

    (Hand Written Signature)

    Tina A. Horton

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

  5. Step 5
    Drop off your resignation
    Drop off your resignation

Drop the letter off at the office, mail it, or pleasantly hand it in to your superiors. You should now be able to tactfully slip away and head towards new and better things!!!
