Things You'll Need:
- A computer with an internet connection
- A family tree
- A pen and paper
-
Step 1
Say the first and middle names to yourself many times to check if they flow. Yell the combination out as if you are calling someone to see if the first and middle names feel right together.
-
Step 2
Check the meaning in various languages. You may be surprised what your choice means in another country.
-
Step 3
Pay attention to the initials. Negative acronyms should be avoided. Make sure the initials do not spell odd words such as “RAT.”
-
Step 4
You may want to avoid rhyming first and middle names such as Ray Jay – the combination may become a trigger for school yard teasing
-
Step 5
If you want to give your baby an exotic name, but are not quite sure about it, use it as a middle name.
-
Step 6
Browse your family tree for ideas. You may come across a hidden gem that you will treasure for a lifetime.
-
Step 7
Avoid more than 2 middle names. Having too long a name may become a problem when filling out legal documents and other paperwork.
-
Step 8
Honor a family member. You have your heart set on a name, but you still want to honor your dear aunt. Use her name as a middle name!
-
Step 9
Keep in mind that your child may grow up to use their middle name only. Many people prefer to go by their middle name, with the first being virtually unknown to all other than close family members.
-
Step 10
If the middle name just doesn't seem to fit, leave it out. Who says a middle name is a must?
