Things You'll Need:
- Healthy feed options for the ducks.
-
Step 1
Skip the junk. While watching others feed ducks I have seen a huge amount of junk brought to feed them with. Skip the white bread, the sugary cereal, doughnuts, and potato chips!
-
Step 2
Bring healthy leftovers. Wheat bread, cereals with lots of grains, and leftover bugs and worms (usually left over from feeding the fish) are good options that are healthier for the ducks then junk foods.
-
Step 3
Break up large pieces into smaller ones so that the ducks aren't eating huge pieces of bread.
-
Step 4
Buy duck feed. If you feed the ducks often then buying duck feed is very reasonable. Get some cracked corn. This can be purchased any where they sell animal feed and can be very inexpensive, nutritional, and an easy way to have food! (We bought a 50 pound bag for $8 which we have used on a number of occasions and barely tapped into).
-
Step 5
Walk around the pond or lake. This will either make the ducks move or allow you to feed new ducks so all your food doesn't go to the same few ducks (over feeding ducks can be a problem).
-
Step 6
Don't feed the ducks on a day that a lot of other people are there feeding them. Sure it is fun, but so is watching others. (This doesn't always work if you have young kids!)
-
Step 7
While you are there you can also feed your healthier foods to the geese (if there are any). Canadian Geese as well as other types such as the Greylag Goose enjoy these foods as well.
-
Step 8
Don't forget to enjoy any other creatures that might be around such as chipmunks, squirrels, other birds, and even the occasional turtle or fish.
