Things You'll Need:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Calculator
  1. Step 1

There are four formulas that are most accepted in the medical world. These are the Hamwi, Robinson, Devine and Miller formulas. They are very similar and don't take into account lean mass. Therefore, someone with a lot of muscle will weigh more than these formulas suggest and will still be quite fit and healthy.

  2. Step 2

You should do all the calculations for each formula. (The formulas are calculated in kilograms which is 2.2lbs for each kilo).

Hamwi - Men: = 48 kg + 2.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: = 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg for each inch over 5 feet

Robinson - Men: = 52 kg + 1.9 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: = 49 kg + 1.7 kg for each inch over 5 feet

    Devine - Men: = 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
    Women: = 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Miller - Men: = 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg for each inch over 5 feet
Women: = 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg for each inch over 5 feet.

  3. Step 3

Once you have the four numbers, add them together and divide by four. This will give you an average of all the formulas and a better idea of an ideal body weight.
