Everyone struggles with submission. History is full of examples of submissive people described as weak, powerless and spineless. It’s equally full of people who have abused and manipulated the concept of submission for personal gain.
The word submission comes from a Greek military term hupotasso meaning “to arrange troop divisions in a military fashion under the command of a leader".

Today’s workplace provides particularly challenging areas in which it is difficult for workers to submit to authority. If a worker does not agree with the boss, he or she rebels and resists. Many workers do not want anyone telling them what to do, especially a boss who may not be as intelligent or have as much experience as they have. Yet, submission when carried out according to Biblical principles is an expression of strength. To obey and submit to your boss does not mean being a “yes” man or “brown-noser”. A wise worker will always speak the truth in love, and question or challenge-up in a healthy manner regardless of the work environment. Use these 8 strategies to practice Biblical submission at work.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose to give your boss the power to impact your career future by voluntarily cooperating and putting yourself under his or her control. All authority has been established by God; therefore you should submit to his or her leadership. (Romans 13:1)

  2. Step 2

Workers prosper under a good boss; but tend to decline under a bad one. Learn how to work under authority regardless of the quality of the boss. (Proverbs 29:2)

  3. Step 3

Actively look for ways to improve your productivity and efficiency. Do your work with gusto. (Proverbs 31:17)

  4. Step 4

Surrender your right to do things your way or speak as you please. Arrogance, resistance and pride will land you right on your face if you’re not careful; but a collaborative spirit will cause you to be recognized as a value-added worker. (Proverbs 29:23)

  5. Step 5

Carry your share of the burden and assume responsibility for your side of the work relationship. Ask God to establish and promote your work as you commit it to Him. (Psalm 90:17)

  6. Step 6

Believe that submitting to your boss’ authority will be beneficial. Survive and thrive in difficult work environments as you learn wisdom from others who carry out the boss’ orders in challenging situations. (Proverbs 28:26)

  7. Step 7

Allow yourself to become vulnerable—placed in a position where you may lose the advantage. Take your focus off of self and place it on the task, challenge, boss or other co-workers. (Romans 13:8)

  8. Step 8

Exercise self-control and restraint. Maintain an even temper when provoked. (Proverbs 17:27)
