There are a variety of reasons men and women may suffer from hair loss. For men the tendency is for there to be some genetics associated with balding. Maybe a parent or other close relative suffered from the condition. This is not always the case, but most often true. For women, the same is sometimes true. However, there are reasons that may have to do with other conditions and can be treated. There are also many new products on the market that will help prevent, treat, slow and in some cases even stop you from losing your hair. Read on for more information.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • shampoo
  • vitamins
  • dandruff shampoo
  • conditioner
  1. Step 1

Look at a hair that has fallen out to see if the follicle is still attached. If it is, then that is hair loss. Losing some hair is normal. About 100 hairs per day is about right for someone with an average amount of hair.

  2. Step 2

It is when you see one and a half times what is normal that you should be concerned.

  3. Step 3

If hair is damaged hair loss may be caused by breakage. This is much different from hair falling out from the scalp. Stay away from unnecessary chemicals.

  4. Step 4

Try changing products. Get rid of gels, hairsprays, color, perms, and highlights.

  5. Step 5

First of all rule out medical conditions. Have your thyroid checked in particular. Any irregularity can cause a hormone imbalance which can lead to hair loss. If diagnosed with thyroid irregularity, there are medications that may help the problem.

  6. Step 6

Make sure the scalp is clean. Any dandruff that is caused by fungus or hormonal imbalances may block the follicle from growing. Use a tea tree product or anti-fungal agent. Read my article on dandruff control.

  7. Step 7

If you are using birth control pills, try asking your doctor for one that contains only progesterone. An imbalance in estrogen may lead to hair loss in both men and women. Men who suffer from hair loss have been found to have higher levels of testosterone.

  8. Step 8

Use Propeci_. This is prescription and works for about 80% of men in stopping the progression of hair loss. Get this when you first notice hair loss and you may never lose another hair. It has not been approved for women.

  9. Step 9

Massage the scalp when you shampoo. Increased blood flow is essential for healthy locks.

  10. Step 10

Shampoo your hair often. Do not let dirt accumulate on your scalp and block your pores.

  11. Step 11

When suffering from alopecia when the hair falls out in clumps, a corticosteroid may be necessary. This is a condition that requires a doctor to diagnose.

  12. Step 12

Let your scalp breathe. Stay away from caps.

  13. Step 13

If you are a man. Cut your hair short. This will prevent tugging and pulling out while brushing, and will keep you from doing the dreaded comb-over.

  14. Step 14

Try Nioxon. It is a product sold in some beauty salons that slows hair loss with the use of herbs and specific chemicals.

  15. Step 15

Have hope. There has been a recent discovery how a particular molecule called laminin-511 may help in the hair loss problem.

  16. Step 16

Women may lose hair during menopause because of hormonal fluctuations. Estrogen replacement may help with this.

Tips & Warnings
  • You cannot address this problem too early. The earlier you catch it the more chance you have of saving your hair.
