Craving a break from the hustle and bustle? Check into a spa vacation instead of your usual getaway, and restore your spirit, mind and body. Here are a few pointers on how to book your next spa vacation.

From Quick Guide: Leisure Travel
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what type of experience you’re after. Do you want to lose a few pounds, relax and rejuvenate, or sample a host of new treatments? Be honest with yourself; you don’t want to spend your hard earned money on a package that includes spa cuisine if you’d prefer to forget about calories on your vacation.

  2. Step 2

Do a little proactive pre-planning if this will be your maiden voyage. Visit a local day spa for a facial or massage. Finish with a healthy meal at a nearby restaurant, or choose a spa with a café on site. You'll get a feel for the amenities that will be included and what a typical spa day might be like.

  3. Step 3

Set a budget just as you would for any vacation, factoring in the cost of lodging, meals and spa treatments. If your funds won’t stretch for a four star resort with fancy pampering included, consider going out of season or trying out a new spa or one in a smaller town.

  4. Step 4

Enlist the services of a travel agent and be specific about your “must-have” list and those areas in which you can be flexible. Do you want a luxurious room, but can forage for your own meals? Do you want a spa close to nature for hiking and stargazing, or would you prefer a big city atmosphere? Check out websites that feature spa destinations where vacation packages and last-minute deals are listed (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Think comfort when packing; yoga pants and tees, shoes for hiking or workouts, a bathing suit and a few comfortable separates you can mix and match for sightseeing or dinner out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider adding a new treatment on your spa vacation. How about a blueberry facial, hot stone massage or gynotherapy (vaginal steam bath)?
