It can be difficult to keep track of medications and dosages when taking a number of medications. Organizing your pills will help to promote your health program along with ensuring that pills are taken in a timely and organized manner, as well as prevent the possibility of an overdose. Here's how to organize your pills.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Notebook
  • Computer (optional)
  • Pill organizer
  1. Step 1

Compile a list of all the medications that you are taking. Create a spreadsheet or a word processing document to list all of the medications that you are taking, or keep a notebook handy for this purpose.

  2. Step 2

List the medications with specifics such as the name of the medication, dosage, frequency of use, any side effects or allergies you experience, the expiration date, and if the medication is no longer being used.

  3. Step 3

Create a schedule of when you take your medications. Make a dosage intake chart for each medication and note down the information in Step two.

  4. Step 4

Purchase a weekly pill organizer that has 7 or more compartments to place your medications in and this will help in organizing your medications. Purchase one or two smaller weekly organizer containers if you plan to travel (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Write on a label, a physical description of the medication of what it looks like so that you will be able to identify it immediately in the pill organizer.

  6. Step 6

Create a label for the pill container and label the medication name, and dosage.

  7. Step 7

Set a reminder of when you will need to take these medications. Use an electronic pill reminder (see Resources below), alarm clock or a cell phone alarm. With the cell phone alarm, set a specific ring tone that will you will know that it is time to take your medications.

  8. Step 8

Choose a day in the week that you will refill your pill organizer. Use a sticky note to write down the dates that you have refilled the organizer.

  9. Step 9

Place the weekly medication organizer in a place that is secure but also easily accessible.
