How to Raise a Pomeranian

Learning how to raise a Pomeranian is important if you want to have a friendly and lovable dog. These dogs are small, but can become aggressive towards people and other animals if they are not raised and trained properly. As soon as you bring home the Pomeranian, start training and raising the dog to be the best companion.

• Pomeranian breed book
• Dog crate
• Treats
• Leash and collar
• Dog toys
• Small dog bed

1. Set up a dog crate before you bring the Pomeranian home. Place a dog bed inside, so the dog will be comfortable. This is the first step in housebreaking the dog. Some dogs do become comfortable with the dog crate for security and will want to sleep in it at night rather than in bed with you. Keep the dog in the crate when you cannot watch it. Let the dog outside for potty breaks about once an hour.

2. Socialize the Pomeranian with other animals and with people. A dog that is not socialized will be apprehensive when new animals or people come around. Enroll the dog in a dog obedience class right away. This is how to work on socializing and the basics in obedience. Use treats for a reward when the dog does something good.

3. Groom the dog every day or every other day. Pomeranian dogs need to be brushed so the hair does not mat and form a tangled mess. The nails will need to be clipped and the teeth should be cleaned with a toothbrush or a dog treat that is especially for teeth cleaning.

4. Select a veterinarian to care for the dog. The dog will need a check up once a year as well as a distemper shot. The rabies shot is given every three years. The vet will check the dogs overall health during these check ups.

5. Walk the dog at least once a day or every other day. A Pomeranian does not need to walk far to have enough exercise. Half a mile or less is enough for a small dog. The dog should always be on a leash with a collar.

Tips & Warnings

• Give the dog lots of love and do not keep the dog in a dog crate all the time.
• Feed the dog three times a day until the dog is housebroken.
• Pomeranian dogs are very hyperactive.

on 9/25/2008 How come i took my dog out for about 35 min. and then he came in and had a bowel movement?And also he will bark so i think he has to go out I will take him out & he wants to bite my slippers & play?I am trying to train my 27 month old daughter & a 9 week old boy Pom.Thanks Shannon
