Instructions

    • 1

Place your bamboo plant into a decorative pot of your choice. Make sure the pot is not too large or small but is a good fit for the size of your plant.

    • 2

Fill the pot with marbles or small pebbles. Bamboo plants do better in a water environment and do not require the use of soils. Using the pebbles or marbles will help keep the bamboo plant in place and allow it full access to the water.

    • 3

Fill the pot about 3/4 of the way full with water. It is better to use rain or filtered water to avoid chlorine, fluoride or other substances that may be added to regular drinking water. If your bamboo plant is in a tall pot or vase that comes further up on its base, do not fill it to the top with water. The bamboo plant will form roots where it comes in contact with water, so using a vase full of water would cause the roots to rise to an unattractive level.

    • 4

Drain the water from your bamboo plant every 7 to 10 days or so and fill back up with clean water. Check the level every day to make sure it doesn't drop too low; bamboo plant's roots must always remain in water.

    • 5

Add a liquid plant fertilizer found at your local home and garden store once every month to give your bamboo plant added nutrients and a boost in growth.

    • 6

Avoid placing your bamboo plant in direct sunlight. These plants grow naturally in wet shady areas, and too much sunlight will cause their leaves to become yellow and wither. You can keep your bamboo plants near a window, just not directly in the windowsill where the full light of the sun would hit them. View the Resources below for more information on bamboo plants.
