How to Treat Acne in Dogs
You may be surprised when your dog develops canine acne. Most dog owners think acne is reserved for human teenagers, but think again. This condition typically develops as red bumps and itching on the chin and lips of young dogs. Typically this condition presents itself when the puppy is less than a year old. Although experts don’t know exactly what causes this condition, genetics may play a role. Here's how to treat acne in dogs.

1
Take your dog to the vet for an evaluation. Although you may be quite certain your dog suffers from acne, the vet is a good place to start. Express your concern and ask for an exam.

2
Realize a topical treatment may be prescribed. Just like humans, benzoyl peroxide is often prescribed for canine acne. But don’t be tempted to save a trip to the vet and purchase the product from your drugstore. The dosage for canines is different because their skin may be more sensitive than humans.

3
Know a topical steroid may be prescribed. If your dog has redness and irritation, your vet may prescribe a topical steroid. This can help alleviate these symptoms. Be sure to wear gloves while administering the application.
-
4
Recognize antibiotics may be administered. Your vet may elect to prescribe an antibiotic for the chronic more serious case. This may last anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks.

5
Ask your vet about antibacterial lotions. These products can prevent scaring on your canine. Your vet may recommend the use of an antibacterial product.

Tips & Warnings
Retinoids are rarely used. Although retinoid cream is often used for humans, it’s rarely used in canines. So don’t be tempted to try this treatment at home.
Beware of supplements. If you’re considering using a supplement for canine acne, talk with your vet. Canine supplements don’t have the government oversight of prescription drugs.
