Everyone is looking for a way to save money, and one way to save money is to negotiate a better deal on your cell phone contract. This is not easy, as cell phone companies want to make as much money as possible, but it can be done if you know what to say and do. As you are looking for a better deal on your cell phone contract, remember that the cell phone company wants your business, and this fact puts you in control.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the Internet to research the deals offered by other cell phone providers. Many cell phone companies will offer a special incentive to new customers. Write down these offers. You can also use third-party websites to compare offers side by side.

  2. Step 2

Make a list of what you really need on your cell phone. You may be able to lower your bill by eliminating services that you do not use or need.

  3. Step 3

Call various cell phone providers and outline your needs. Write down the offers you receive. You may find that the provide starts to add on fees and charges as you talk, so writing down what you are quoted is important as you try to negotiate a better cell phone contract.

  4. Step 4

Call your existing provider and ask to talk to a manager. Only a manager will be able to work with you to negotiate a better cell phone contract.

  5. Step 5

Talk to the manager and tell her about the deals you have found with competitor cell phone providers. By telling her that you are looking to switch to another provider, you may find that a better offer is suddenly available.

  6. Step 6

Stay calm while you negotiate. Getting mad or frustrated will not help you get a better deal on your cell phone contract.

  7. Step 7

Switch to a different provider if you cannot get a better deal with your existing cell phone company. This will still get you a better cell phone contract, although not quite as conveniently as it would if you were able to stay with your existing provider.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your notes handy when making phone calls or visits to cell phone companies. This will help you to keep the various offers you are receiving straight in your mind.
  • Never talk to the first person who answers the phone when calling your cell phone provider. This person is a customer service representative and must follow a prescribed script. CSRs do not have the authority to offer you a better cell phone contract.
