Congratulations! You're starting a business in Colorado. This is an exciting time. In order to legally start a business, you need a Colorado sales tax ID number. This is easy to get from the Department of Revenue. With a trade name and a few forms, it's easy to get your sales tax ID. Then you'll be a legally registered business in the state of Colorado.

  • Business trade name
  • Three copies of Colorado form CR0100
  • Personal check or cash

Instructions

      Apply for a Trade Name (also known as a DBA or "Doing Business As" name) at the Secretary of State's website (see FIle a Colorado Trade Name in the Resources section).

      Fill out form CR0100 at TaxColorado.com. The CR0100 form is easy to fill out and comes complete with instructions and a tutorial. Follow the Colorado Department of Revenue Business Tax Tutorial and Forms link in the Resources Section. You will also find the Sales and Use Forms you'll need, with instructions. You can also obtain this form at the Department of Revenue. For a sales tax ID, you only need to fill in sections A, B, C, E, and F on form CR0100.

      Print three copies of form CR0100. Mail or take your application to a Colorado Department of Revenue near you. If you walk in, you'll receive your sales tax ID that day. If you mail your application, you won't get your sales tax ID for several weeks. The Colorado Department of Revenue only accepts cash or check -- no credit cards.

  • Feel free to call the Colorado Business Assistance Center at (303) 592-5920. This service is designed to answer new business owner's questions.

  • The cost to apply for a Sales Tax ID varies depends on the month and year you apply. It ranges between $4 and $16. You also must put down a $50 sales tax deposit that is refunded after you collect $50 in sales tax for the state of Colorado.

  • The Secretary of State charges $20 when you apply for a Trade Name.

  • You will need Adobe Acrobat to download and view PDF files.
