How to Sharpen Skis
In order for your skis to perform like they are supposed to, you need to keep your edges sharp. Sharp edges help your skis bite into the snow and help you turn. They are very important. 1
Warm skis by taking them inside. While the skis are cold, you can put skis on vises with the edges up, use a rubber band to hold the brakes back, and clean off any dirt.
-
2
Clamp file onto the file guide with file clamp. The file guide is an angled piece of metal that creates the proper edge angle. One side of the file guide has a groove. Place the groove against the base. This allows metal files to drop to the floor without damaging the bases. Choose your file guide based on what edge angle you want your ski to have.

3
Keep the file guide flush with the base. The file should sit on the side edge at an angle and overhang the edge.
-
4
Using smooth even strokes pull the file toward you from tip to tail. Cover 20 cm (10 to 12 inches) at a time. Lift up and repeat being sure to overlap the previous segment each time. Change the amount of file that overhangs the side edge to ensure an even wear of the file.

5
Test sharpness with your fingernail. Your nail should curl if the ski edge is sharp enough.
-
6
Turn ski over and repeat Steps 2 through 5 for other side edge.
-
7
Clean file with brush to remove filings.
