Since NTop was originally made for Linux operating systems, I spend a good two weeks trying to install it on Ubuntu. Fortunately for me, I finally realized that you can also install it on any Windows machine.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with Windows OS
  • Internet Connection
  1. Step 1

In an internet browser, proceed to the NTop-XTRA link found below these steps.

  2. Step 2

Read about NTop-XTRA and its features. I assure you that it the exact same network monitoring program that you can download at ntop.org. It just runs on Windows as a daemon.

  3. Step 3

Once you are ready, click on "Download" in the upper right-hand corner below the OPEN-XTRA logo.

  4. Step 4

On the next page, click on the top "Download" button to install the "NTop_XTRA_3_18_0.exe" executable file on your system.

  5. Step 5

To run the InstallShield Wizard, double-click on the file you just downloaded and follow its instructions. To run NTop your computer, you will need to know the IP address of your machine. I have included a link below to a great How To article on how to find your IP address on any Windows OS.

  6. Step 6

Once you have the "OPENXTRA Commander" daemon, you can start and stop the NTop service. It also gives you the option of launching the service, however I do not recommend doing that. It is much easier to just open a browser and go to the URL "http://Your_IP_Address:3000" and see all the NTop output.

  7. Step 7

The picture to the left is what NTop running on your browser should look like. Enjoy monitoring your network. Thanks for reading.
