Zoom to the Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the only zoos in America with no admission cost and a wonderful way for families in particular to spend the afternoon. There's a great menagerie of animals to take in here, but the best section by far is the sprawling chimp and gorilla pavilion.

Families won't want to miss the Chicago's Children Museum, which offers free Monday admissions for kids under 16. Interactive fun (like lab activities) blends with great exhibits such as the Dinosaur Expedition.

3
Grant Park is a delight, an attractive bastion of green spaces, lake views and frequent musical concerts. The iconic Buckingham Fountain is a nice photo op, and the park hosts three superb museums-including the heralded Field Museum of Natural History.

4
Art lovers will savor the Chicago Cultural Center, with a strong collection of varied works plus unique changing exhibitions of all natures. The gigantic tiffany glass dome is simply a wonder.
-
5
The Garfield Park Conservatory celebrates flower (and plant) power to the fullest, and the nearly five-acre grounds are an ideal way to wile away an hour. The countless rare tropical plants in the handsome glass structure are a particular highlight.
-
6
The Navy Pier is one of the city's liveliest draws, and has plenty to offer. While you will have to pay for some of the activities (like an IMAX theater), the people-watching and views of the city are free and plenty fun.
-
7
Summertime visitors can indulge in free flicks at the "Movies at the Park" series, hosted in different parks around Chicago. A wonderful way to enjoy a warm alfresco evening watching movie stars under real ones.
-
8
Oak Street Beach is a Chicago standby, alive in fair weather with sun worshippers, skaters and all manner of Windy City natives. The area makes a nice stroll, even in winter, but make sure you're bundled up to withstand the wind whipping off Lake Michigan.
