Things You'll Need:
- A Cigar
- A Butane Lighter or Wooden Matches
- An Ashtray
-
Step 1
As you smoke your cigar, oils and tar tend to build up within the body of the cigar, causing the flavor to become bitter and less enjoyable. The point of which a cigar turns bitter is a matter of taste and cigar, but let's assume that the cigar begins to take on a bitter flavor about half-way through smoking it.
-
Step 2
Tap off any excess ash from the end of your cigar into your ashtray. Try to expose the burning red embers at the end of your cigar.
-
Step 3
Using a butane lighter or wooden matches apply a flame just beneath the burning end of your cigar so that the flame just barely touches the foot.
-
Step 4
Take a deep breath of fresh air and then blow through your cigar to "purge" it. You should be blowing about as hard as you would if you were blowing up a party balloon.
-
Step 5
While blowing through your cigar, the tar and oils causing the bitter taste will be expelled through the foot of your cigar. The flame you're holding to the foot of the cigar will cause those oils to ignite, creating a small flame.
-
Step 6
If there are a lot of oils built up in your cigar, the flame that ignites at the foot will continue to burn even without your match or lighter. The flame will burn until you stop blowing through your cigar or until all the excess oils are burned up.
-
Step 7
After "purging" check the foot of your cigar to see that it is still lit thoroughly. If not, relight it as you normally do.
-
Step 8
Take a deep puff of your now "purged" cigar and enjoy the refreshed flavor!
