How to Change the Number of Default Sheets in an Excel Workbook

When you start Excel chances are it loads in three blank worksheets as a default. Did you know you can change that to whatever number you want? Here are those steps.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Excel
  1. Step 1

    Open Excel

  2. Step 2
    Tools
    Tools

    Click the "Tools" menu item located at the top of the screen.

  3. Step 3

    Click the "Options" submenu item.

  4. Step 4
    General Tab

    On the options window that appears, click the "General" tab. It is circled in red in the picture.

  5. Step 5
    Sheets in a Workbook
    Sheets in a Workbook

    Halfway down the Options window under the tab "General", locate the item labeled, "Sheets in a new Workbook". Change that number to whatever number you want. It is circled in red in the pictured.

  6. Step 6

    Close Excel

  7. Step 7
    New sheet count
    New sheet count

    Open up Excel again and verify that the number of sheets that it starts with is the same number that you entered in step 5.
