Things You'll Need:
- A computer with internet access.
-
Step 1
Finding the right online dating service is really about finding the site that offers features that meet your needs at an affordable price.
Length of Time in Business
Internet businesses come and go. Online dating services are relatively easy to start and not very expensive. But, ease of start up doesn't necessarily mean there is a well thought out business plan, which is why many dating services fail. The ones that have been around a few years have worked out any problems, plus they have name recognition and a good reputation, making them good choices, but not necessarily the best choice for you. Take time to research each company before making a monetary commitment. -
Step 2
Narrow Them Down
Years ago, online dating was simple. Only a few sites existed. Men and women signed up, agreed to meet in person, and sometimes they even got married! Today, the world of online dating is different. The most obvious difference between then and now is the sheer number of online dating services that are available.
Ask yourself if you care if the person you date has the same religious beliefs as you, is a particular age or is in a range of ages, has a sexual preference, is already involved in a committed relationship, and/or is of a particular nationality such as Asian, Russian, American, or any other nationality. If you look around the internet long enough, you will find an online dating site serving the niche you want. -
Step 3
Profile/Photo Approval Process
Some of the sites offer extensive personality profiling and testing, both of which are designed to help members find perfect mates. While very effective, navigating these can be cumbersome and time-consuming, often taking several hours to complete. If you're not comfortable with this level of detail, move on to a site with less profiling. Also check out the rules for posting photos and the amount of time it takes to get photos and profiles approved. -
Step 4
Chat Capability/Monitored Chat Rooms
The ability to chat is important as you go through the online dating cycle. Most paid memberships offer this, but check to be certain. But that's not what's most important in regard to chat capabilities. Some sites actively monitor the language in the chat rooms and others don't. Unfortunately, those that don't often are filled with crude language and explicit sexual offers. -
Step 5
Costs
Cost is important, but it isn't necessarily as important as the issues mentioned above. Make sure you understand everything you get for the price of admission – length of membership, number of matches, and so forth. Also check whether there are additional costs associated with your membership. -
Step 6
Safety
Online dating sites try to monitor the people who join to make sure you will not meet anyone dangerous. However, as careful as they try to be, they cannot really tell who is a threat and who is not. So, be extremely careful when online dating and never agree to meet an online “friend” in person unless you take someone with you and meet in a public place, preferably during the day. Take a cell phone, your own transportation, and money. Be sure someone knows where you are, who you are with, and when you will return home. Before continuing to date someone, you should check out him or her carefully, very carefully! If you are under 18 years of age, you should never meet an online friend in person. Never!
