Seeing the Highlights in Europe

Being single does not mean that you cannot travel to Europe. There are many options for single travelers and many tour operators who specialize in trips for singles. You can book a regular tour and enjoy meeting people of all circumstances in life, join a singles tour to mingle with other singles, or travel independently as a single.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clothing for every occasion
  • Comfortable shoes for walking
  • Toiletries
  • Medicine
  • Guidebooks
  • Maps
  • Camera
  • Money
  • Money belt
  • Passport
  • Credit card
  • Airplane tickets
  1. Step 1

Decide on your destination. Do you want a land tour? A cruise? Time on your own? Fully escorted? With other singles? With a certain age range?

  2. Step 2

Decide when you will go. The most crowded and the hottest time in Europe is July and August. June and September are also popular with Americans, followed by May and October. Christmas in Europe sounds festive, but some places are especially crowded that time of year.

  3. Step 3

Research activities, tour groups, packages and travel agents. Discuss your plans with a travel agent before booking.

  4. Step 4

Reserve your trip—either yourself or with the assistance of a travel agent. Allow for plenty of time to get the arrangements you want, including flights, accommodations, tours, cruise ships, excursions, transportation and meals.

  5. Step 5

Get acquainted with travelers on travel boards. Find out tips and recommendations from others.

  6. Step 6

Choose your wardrobe for travel. Pack light but bring enough appropriate clothing. Some churches have signs telling you what type of clothing is acceptable; some have people at the doors turning people away who are not appropriately dressed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Book travel insurance.
  • Ask about single supplements. Sometimes they are unnecessary.
  • If you are using airline miles for free flights or to upgrade to Business/First Class, book as early as possible.
  • Be sure your passport is up-to-date and bring along your medication.
  • Take note that hotel rooms can be quite small in Europe, and some may not include a private bathroom.
  • Leave your hotel room key at the front desk when you leave for the day.
  • Check with the State Department ahead of time for any possible safety issues.
  • If the hotel asks for your passport, make sure you get it back or wait while it writes down the necessary information.
  • Use the same safety precautions you would use in any big city. When traveling alone, find a buddy to let somebody know where you are when you wander from the group.
