How to Get a Job in the NFL

Jobs in the National Football League, or NFL, are limited. Many people who work for the NFL make it a career. Because of this, most jobs open up when a person retires. Preparation is the key to getting a job in the NFL. Making sure that you fully understand the job requirements and what you are expected to do will make getting the job easier. In some cases, you will have to demonstrate your worthiness to the NFL team before you are offered a job.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what job you want to try to get. The National Football League has a wide variety of positions. Coach, player, manager, official, spokesman, commentator, agent, cheerleader, office staff and janitorial crew are some of the possibilities.

    • 2

Find out the requirements for each job. Each job has different requirements. An NFL official, for example, has to have at least 10 years experience officiating football events. At least five of those have to be at the collegiate or minor league level. You can find this out by visiting the NFL Team Jobs Board and One Day Jobs (see Resources) to find out the specifications for jobs that are currently available.

    • 3

Prepare your resume. Be sure to include all relevant experience. It is a good idea to include contact information for your references because NFL will usually process applications of candidates who provide this information before candidates that only say that references are available upon request.

    • 4

Fill out the application online. Keep a copy of the application for your records. In some cases, you will have to mail a copy of the printed application to the NFL team. If this is the case, mail it immediately after you fill out the form online.

    • 5

Be prepared for a phone interview or an interview in person. If you live far away from the city in which you are applying, you will usually have a phone interview first. If you live in or near the city, you will probably have a face to face interview. Regardless of the type of interview you have, make sure that you have a copy of your resume available. You can look at it during a phone interview and you can give it to the interviewer if your interview is in person. Dress in business attire if your interview is in person.

    • 6

Be prepared to accept an unpaid position or internship. Most NFL teams will offer you an unpaid internship for a specific length of time. Once that period of time is over, your performance will be evaluated. If you did a good job, you may be offered a permanent paid position.
