When you watch the best in the world play soccer, you notice how quick their feet move. They are not just fast, strong and accurate, the world class footballers have a bottomless bag of tricks. Being able to break out great moves or tricks at the drop of a hat gives a soccer player a dimension that is very hard to defend.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Have a ball at your feet all the time. You have to be able to move the ball like it's second nature and there is only one way to do it: actually make it second nature. Take the ball with you when you go running through your neighborhood, around your house or when you're walking your dog. Wherever you can dribble a ball in different directions and at different paces, you should. You'll get very comfortable, very quickly with the ball at your feet.

  2. Step 2

Try the scissors. The most basic of all moves is the scissors. To do a scissor you sidestep around the ball with the outside of your foot moving past the ball first. Bring it 360 degrees around the ball and then very quickly take the ball in one direction or the other. There is also a double-scissor, where you repeat the step once with each foot. In the pros, players will do three, four sometimes five in a row before breaking.

  3. Step 3

Know that the stepover is a lot like a reverse-scissor. You'll fake like your going to kick the ball or dribble with the inside of your foot, but you'll bring your foot past it and then 360 degrees around the ball. You'll then take it in another direction--most likely with the outside of the foot that you did the stepover with. The stepover is a great move to use when turning 180 degrees, too.

  4. Step 4

Consider the two basic components of a move. Change of direction and change of pace are the two basic components of a move. Whatever move you do--croif, stepover, pullback, spin, scissors--you'll need to explode out of the move. You'll want to be moving faster coming out of the move than going into it, but you'll also want to be going the way the defender least suspects.

  5. Step 5

Be aware that foot speed is everything in soccer. The faster your feet are, the better, quicker, more efficient and harder to defend your tricks will become. You can freeze defenders in their tracks with super-fast feet and you will always have an advantage of being a player that can win one-on-one battles.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult a physician before taking part in any strenuous activity.
  • Always stretch before you play.
