How to Become a Fantasy Sports Writer

One could argue that fantasy sports have added a totally new dimension to sports coverage. Almost every die-hard and casual sports fan plays at least one fantasy sport. With so much energy, time and money being put towards fantasy sports, the demand is high for fantasy sports writers. Here is how to become a fantasy sports writer.

Instructions

    • 1

Be multi-dimensional. Remember that fantasy sports writers are needed in all sports. If you focus all your energy on being just a fantasy football writer, you'll have a harder time getting published. Remember that all four major team sports in the United States--hockey, basketball, baseball and football--have heavy fantasy followings. As a fantasy writer you need to know all the big players in all the big sports.

    • 2

Know the difference. Knowing a lot about sports is very different than knowing a lot about fantasy sports. The top five best players in any given league will never be the top five fantasy point-earners in that sport. Fantasy sports are all about stats, not what happens on the field, court or ice. Remember to pay close attention to trends, stats and match-ups, as opposed to the dimension of the game.

    • 3

Understand that there is no sure thing. When covering fantasy sports or writing advice to others, remember that there is nothing that is set in stone in fantasy. Injuries, match-ups and different rules in different leagues send the value of players all over the place. Remember things are always changing in fantasy sports, sometimes almost faster than in the sports themselves.

    • 4

Be original. Think of the advice that no one else is giving. Study your material and offer your reader a unique perspective on the topic. If you think Adrian Peterson should be drafted before Ladanian Tomlinson, then explain why. If you think that Vincent Lecavailler will score more points than Jerome Iginla, then explain it. Uniqueness is what will keep your readers coming back.
