How to Become a Paramedical Aesthetician After Graduating Cosmetology School
Cosmetology school affords you a wealth of information, but sometimes graduates want to learn even more. A logical step up from cosmetology is paramedical aesthetics. While cosmetology deals with many aspects of the physical appearance, aesthetics deals mainly with the skin. The current trend in non-invasive aesthetic procedures suggests that anyone interested in becoming a paramedical aesthetician can experience great success.

Continue your education. Most states will require aestheticians to graduate from a state-licensed program (it is important to check your state laws to see what they dictate). These programs are very much like apprenticeship programs; they typically combine classroom lectures with demonstrations from a professional and 'real-world' work. Required courses at any of these programs will most likely include: skin treatment administration, skin analysis & massage, cosmetics, hair removal, makeup application and customer service. The majority of programs consist of classes as well as 600 hours in medical aesthetics, but there are some centers now that offer a 350 hour advanced diploma program. Discover what you do best. Being an aesthetician is about more than performing procedures, your main objective is to nurture customers; you want to make them look and feel their best. Whether it's massage and facials, hair removal, skin rejuvenation or cosmetics, knowing your strengths will help you to relate to your customers and give them a fantastic experience. Take the time to learn about skin care and find the areas that you excel in. Once you discover you’re area of expertise, get as much practice as you can during your training so that you can gain the experience necessary to eventually obtain employment.

Get your license. Not only will you have to go through proper aesthetician schooling, but all states also require you to obtain a state license. While all states require an aesthetician’s license, the process to obtain one may differ slightly in each state. After completing the required courses and the required number of hours needed, individuals will then need to take a written test and undergo a live demonstration of abilities. This will be set up by the school where you continue your aesthetician education. Once these steps are completed to the state’s satisfaction, you will be given your license and are then able to obtain a job.

Apply for a job. Aesthetician services are now one of the most sought after services in the beauty and health industry. Gaining a position at a reputable spa, salon or dermatologist office will allow you to excel in your field and build a strong reputation of success. Searching online or in the daily news for jobs will give you a good idea of the quantity and quality of jobs that are available. Another option is to cold call area spas, salons and dermatologist offices. Oftentimes these offices will take your application into consideration, and in the very least, they will keep your resume on file for future reference. Another avenue to explore would be to talk to officials at your aesthetician school. They always have an eye on the aesthetics community and may be able to help you find a place of employment.
