The following steps will enable the reader to be prepared to catch the Pokemon "Latios" and "Latias." These are two of the legendary Pokemon available in either the Ruby or Sapphire versions of the Pokemon video games for Game Boy Advance.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gameboy Advance
  • Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire

Preparing to Catch "Latios" or "Latias"

  1. Step 1

Look at your Pokemon game cartridge. Note if it is the Ruby or Sapphire version of the game. This will affect which Pokemon, whether "Latias" or "Latios," that you should pursue first. If your game cartridge denotes that it is the Ruby version, then you will catch "Latios" first. If your game cartridge denotes that it is the Sapphire version, then you will catch "Latias" first.

  2. Step 2

Defeat the Elite Four. This can be achieved through classic Pokemon leveling techniques. In order to level up your Pokemon satisfactorily to defeat the "Elite Four," allow all six of your battling Pokemon to gain relatively equal shares of experience.

  3. Step 3

Equip an "EXP Share" on a weaker Pokemon, which lets your stronger Pokemon split the experience with your weaker one. If you approach the "Elite Four" with evenly-leveled and multifarious-type Pokemon (such as fire, grass, water, electric, psychic, and ice types), you should have no problem defeating them, moving closer to your goal of catching "Latias" and "Latios."

  4. Step 4

Return to your house in "Littleroot Town," where you began the game. Watch the TV in your virtual house until you come across a television program regarding "Latias" and "Latios."

  5. Catching Your First Legendary Pokemon

  6. Step 1

Stock up on "Great Balls" and "Ultra Balls" and roam the tall grass around "Hoenn." Do not be discouraged if you do not immediately find "Latias" or "Latios;" use your time searching as an opportunity to level up a flying Pokemon and a Pokemon that can use or will learn the move "Mean Look" if you do not already have high-level Pokemon with these abilities.

  7. Step 2

Search for the Pokemon until it appears in battle. When you encounter "Latias" or "Latios" for the first time, you may not be able to capture it since it flees after one turn, or, sometimes, immediately on sight. However, once you see the Pokemon in battle, it is in your "Pokedex."

  8. Step 3

Track the Pokemon in your "Pokedex." Use your flying Pokemon to fly to a random city, and if "Latias" or "Latios" is nearby, rush to the the tall grass to battle it.

  9. Step 4

Begin battle with a Pokemon that either knows the move "Mean Look" or has the ability "Shadow Tag." These maneuvers exist in order to keep "Latias" and "Latios" from fleeing immediately.

  10. Step 5

Whittle down the Pokemon's health until only a sliver remains.

  11. Step 6

Catch it with a "Great Ball" or "Ultra Ball," or if you prefer, put it to sleep first, followed by this strategy. With luck, you should capture the first legendary Pokemon.

  12. Catching the Remaining Pokemon

  13. Step 1

Place the Pokemon you caught at the front of your party. It will help in battling its counterpart since it has abilities that will not quickly make it faint during battle, allowing for easier capture.

  14. Step 2

Find a friend who has the opposite version of the game, if possible. if do you have a friend who has the other version of the game, consider referring your friend to the above strategy for his or her version, and propose a reasonable trade once your friend has obtained the Pokemon you desire.

  15. Step 3

Obtain an "Eon Ticket" at a Nintendo-sponsored event if you would like to capture it on your own. This will allow you to battle the other Pokemon in your version.

Tips & Warnings
  • When beginning the search for "Latios" or "Latias," once it is released into the wild, try buying "Repel," "Super Repel," or "Max Repel" in order to bypass the common Pokemon in the tall grass.
  • If you do this, spray the "Repellent" in the tall grass in which you are searching and walk through it as normal.
  • "Latias" and "Latios" change their locations when a new route or city is entered.
  • If you use "Repel" to find "Latios" or "Latias" more easily, be sure to lead your party with a Pokemon that is near (but NOT above) level 40. This is because "Latias" and "Latios" appear at level 40, and if your party is led by a Pokemon above level 40, you will end up repelling the very Pokemon you are searching for.
