How to Make Tracks for a Robot

The tracks on your robot have worn out, so you have to replace them. The only problem is that new ones are expensive. They are original and are made to fit your robot perfectly, but since they are so cost-prohibitive, there is no chance of your buying them. Search for alternative tracks that you can use to make your robot run again.

Things You'll Need

  • Alternative tracks
  • Two extra wheels
  • Stiff wire

Instructions

    • 1

Look for the right-sized tracks that may be for a toy tank. Make sure that the tracks are the correct width and at least a similar tread to what is already on the robot. Even if the tracks are a bit long, they can still work; most tracks can be shortened to fit your robot.

    • 2

Add an extra wheel drive to your robot if the replacement tracks are too big. This will allow you to stretch the excess track over the new extension of the wheel drive to make the track fit.

    • 3

Use a little ingenuity to make it work. The tank track can be fitted underneath with a stiff wire. This lets you attach the track to the wheel drive. Once the wire is attached to the track itself, fit it around the wheel drive. Make sure that there is not any slack on the wire. Also make sure that the wire is not completely wrapped around the wheel drive. If this happens, the track will not be able to rotate around the wheel drive, and the track will not move.

    • 4

Fit the track on top of the wire. Now test your robot to make sure that the track is workable. See if you need to tighten your track or perhaps loosen it. Once the track is attached and moves properly, you are done.

    • 5

Be sure that you do not throw away the old track. If it is similar to what you are replacing it with, you may be able to use it to repair the track, if needed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to buy an item that you can return if it does not work. Otherwise, you will have a lot of tracks that you cannot use and end up paying almost the same as for an original new track.

  • A robot is an excellent piece of machinery. Be careful that you do not spoil it just to save some money.
