How to Make Hop Bets in Casino Craps
The craps table can be an exciting and confusing place to gamble. There are numerous bets which can be made. In this article we discuss hop bets. Hop bets are one roll bets which allow the player to bet on the next combination of the dice. Hop bets pay 30 to 1 for hard ways (dice combo 3,3 is a hard way) and 15 to 1 for the rest (dice combo 5,4). Speak in a clear, loud voice when making hop bets, to ensure your bet is heard and booked by the dealers.

Memorize the number of ways each bet can be hopped. There are two ways to hop the 4's, 5's, 9's and 10's. There are three ways to hop the 6's, 7's and 8's.

Know the bet(s) you wish to hop prior to throwing your chips on the table. Craps is a fast paced game, the dealers will not wait. Uncertain wagers will be called “No Bet” by dealers who are running the game.

Call out the dice combination and the dollar amount you wish to hop. For example: “Hop the 7's for 3 dollars.” This means you want to hop the 6,1 and 5,2 and 4,3; three numbers hopping for 1 dollar each.

Leave your winning bet up. Dealers will automatically deduct the losing bets to leave your action in play for the next roll. If you want your winnings and your initial bet, then call out “bring my hop bet down.”

Tips & Warnings
Fours can be hopped two ways: the “easy way” 3,1 and the “hard way” 2,2.
Fives can be hopped two ways: 4,1 and 3,2.
Sixes can be hopped three ways: the easy way 5,1 and 4,2 and the hard way 3,3.
Sevens can be hopped three ways: 6,1 and 5,2 and 4,3.
Eights can be hopped three ways: the easy way 5,3 and 6,2 and the hard way 4,4.
Nines can be hopped two ways: 5,4 and 6,3.
Tens can be hopped two ways: the easy way 6,4 and the hard way 5,5.
This article does not discuss bets on numbers 2, 3, 11 and 12 because these are known as proposition bets and are different from hop bets.
Speak clearly when calling out the number(s) you want to hop. If the dealers do not understand what you want they will “No Bet” your action.
Ensure you throw in enough chips to cover the bet you want to make. A number with two ways to roll needs a minimum of 2 dollars. A number with three ways to roll needs a minimum of 3 dollars.
Most casinos will not let you make a 2 dollar bet unless you have the table minimum in play. Table minimums generally range from 5 to 100 dollars.
