The more you try to improve your golf scores, the more you focus on your grip, takeaway, swing speed and rotation. You may even practice the type of shots like your short game or putting that cost you the most strokes. Only the true devotee realizes that a good hip rotation is essential to hitting the golf ball longer and straighter, and tries to perfect that part of his swing during practice time. The way you use your hips is essential to playing better golf. Here are things you can to to improve that aspect of the game.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Watch what the professionals do. Arguably, Mickelson, Woods and Singh have the best hip rotation in the sport today. Try to focus on them from the belt down to see how they develop tremendously powerful swings through proper hip movement. In each case, their hip action results in accelerated clubhead speed at impact, thus longer and straighter shots. Better yet, find a touring professional who is built similar to you and tape his swing whenever possible. Replay it several times before you hit the practice range.

  2. Step 2

After taking the club to its position at the top, your shoulders should rotate about 90 degrees from your starting position while your hips rotate about half as far. The difference between the two creates the torque, giving you power during your downswing. Proper use of the hips will increase the distance of your shots substantially.

  3. Step 3

Gradually try to speed up the rotation of your hips to add more distance to your shots. However, during the down swing you do not want to rotate your hips too quickly. Instead, your swing should naturally transfer your weight from the back to the front in a fluid motion. Ironically, if your hip movement is too fast, you will hit the golf ball shorter and with less accuracy.

  4. Step 4

Make sure that your hip movement is the first thing to start on your downswing, not your shoulders. If the shoulders begin first, the shot will have less distance and most likely you will slice your shot to the right.

  5. Step 5

Do targeted golf exercises to make it easier to accomplish this powerful move in your golf swing. No question, hip movement requires you to have more strength than your realize. You may tell your body to move your hips more quickly, but if you are not strong or flexible enough, you will encounter difficulty. Start by doing circular stretching exercises like twisting crunches on a stability ball. If you belong to a health club, a trainer will show you how to do this. This stretch and resistance exercise will greatly improve your bodies ability to generate maximum power with your hips.
